Student Legal Services

Student Legal Services (SLS), established in 1973, provides legal advice and representation to eligible students at West Virginia University. SLS is available to educate students about their legal rights and responsibilities and to provide services to all undergraduate students and eligible graduate students with legal matters including leases, contracts, landlord/tenant issues and consumer problems. SLS provides referrals for cases that they choose not to handle directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Currently, SLS is staffed by a full-time lawyer, Carrie Sergi, and a part-time lawyer, Mollianne Starcher; two law clerks from the College of Law at West Virginia University; and a full-time legal secretary.

Walk-ins are welcome; however, appointments are granted on a "first come, first served" basis. Therefore, students are encouraged to contact our office as soon as a legal issue arises in order to receive timely assistance. To schedule an appointment, contact Student Legal Services today.

SLS is commited to providing the students at West Virginia University with the best legal services possible. To ensure that we are providing the best services, we ask our clients to fill out a client satisfaction survey once their case has been closed. This survey allows us insight into our clients' needs and overall approval of the services we have provided.

Student Legal Services also provides a student mediation service for WVU students. This is a new service that provides disputants with a neutral third party, a mediator, to help resolve disputes in a reasonable manner. Students who are interested in student mediation should visit the WVU Student Mediation Services page and/or contact Student Legal Services
