New Hire FAQs

  • What does it mean to work in Student Life?

We're so excited to have you join us! The Division of Student Life prides itself on putting students first and this is evident in all of our programs and services. We thrive on collaborative efforts and encourage our staff to cultivate positive and productive partnerships not just with their Divisional colleagues, but with those across the University. Our jobs are not always conducted during standard business hours and while we are committed to our students' success, we also respect the ability of our employees to adjust their schedules as needed.

  • Is there anything I need to know or do before my first day?

Before your first day, you will need to complete payroll processing with Shared Services. They will want you to complete the forms remotely. Please email SharedServices@mail.wvu.edu for further instructions. Make sure to include your full legal name, anticipated start date, and job position accepted. In addition, many employees wish to know that WVU pays bi-weekly in arrears (meaning at the end of each pay period, not at the beginning). Because of this, your first paycheck will only reflect one-half of your first pay period. Any payroll questions and information can be found on the Payroll website. Also, if you would like to inquire about parking options for on-site employees, please visit the Parking Department website here. There are also $5 one-day permits for Hybrid employees available for purchase.

  • Is there an in-person orientation for new employees?

Yes! We will hold one each semester for new employees. You will receive an email asking you to sign up ahead of time. You can find more information about our in-person orientation here.

  • What is the appropriate attire at WVU?

Please consult with your supervisor regarding the policy for your area.

  • Where do I find information for My Expenses, Mountaineer Marketplace and P-card related questions?

Please see the Procurement Contracting & Payment Services Website or email PCPS@mail.wvu.edu.

  • Does WVU offer employees any perks?

Yes! See the list of perks here.

  • How do I get involved with committees on campus, sign up for trainings and learn about professional organizations?

Please consult with your supervisor prior to committing to committee memberships. You can find information about these types of professional development opportunities here.

  • How do I sign up to volunteer at events for Student Life?

Please keep an eye on your email for volunteer opportunities. You may also contact UR about any upcoming events or consult your supervisor.

  • How can I meet new people?

New employees will have the opportunity to join our Connect with a Colleague Program, where they will be paired with an established member of the Student Life team. Student Life also has a Social Committee which plans periodic after-work outings at which all are welcome. The Division also hosts in-person gatherings (like our December Conference and May Retreat) throughout the year.

  • How do I stay aware of important dates/events in Student Life and for WVU at-large?

Please see the WVU Events Calendar and/or the WVU Academic Calendar to stay informed of upcoming events.

  • Where do I find activities and events in the greater Morgantown area?

See the Guide to Morgantown information on our webpage.
